Memory upgrades are the easiest and fastest way to boost the speed in your computer and the best part is that most every computer made can benefit from this simple to install memory upgrade that is easy to perform yourself or have installed by an authorized technician

What most computer users do when buying apple memory is to buy direct from Apple but this is one mistake you can make as the pricing for apple memory is very expensive. There is nothing wrong per se, with buying memory upgrades from Apple directly, but you can do better on price without wasting your time. Apple memory ugprades are easy to install and many third party vendors can and will sell you guaranteed ram that’s certified to work with apple computers but for much less money than you can expect to pay elsewhere.

What kind of memory to I need?

This is a question that I get every day. Hi Jim, I have a macbook, or iMac, or iBook and I can’t find the memory that I need they all ask.

The easiest way to find the memory you need is to have your mac tell you:

1. Go to the apple menu on the top left corner of your mac.

2. Select About this Mac

3. The About this Mac window opens, and will tell you how much memory you have, and what type: On ramseeker.com where I monitor prices for Apple Memory , I list the model name of the macintosh (some are discontinued, you’ll have to scroll a bit) and and what speed the memory is, as apple has an annoying habit of naming every model the same with little to differentiate the models other than motherboard speed, ram speed, or soemtimes by release date. According to Apple, they’re all iMac’s.

If you email me with the question: Hey Jim, I have an iMac and I don’t know what type of memory I need, I can’t help you until I know what speed of memory you take. The iMac has been manufactured for over ten years now. If you have an original iMac, it might be better for you to upgrade the entire computer, rather than just the memory. That said, there’s an entire site dedicated to get the most out of your older macintosh computer and I suggest you visit them for tips to squeeze the most life out of your older apple computer.

Back to the Memory Upgrades for Apple: We now know what speed your apple computer is, and what type of memory it takes. Then we can use the navigational menus on ramseeker to select the right memory upgrades for your apple computer as you need them or you can read here, and I’ll tell you all the specifics of every apple computer every made, and what type of ram it needs, and if possible, the max. Sometimes you can bend the rules a bit with certain models and add more memory than actually specified in the specs, but I’ll leave you to do the searching for that. This is usually due to the fact that at time of release, the memory chips avialable maxed out at a certain size. For example, some of the macbooks and macbook pro models are only spec’d to take 2 GB max, but that was before the release of 2gb memory chips. Some macbooks from a few years ago state they can only take 2gb, but they’ll take more ram and run smoothly , but your mileage may vary. For now, we’ll assume the maximum memory allowed to be what was available at time of manufacturer.

Apple eMac Memory

The Apple eMac comes in many speeds, styles, and like everything apple does, its’ all called the eMac, which makes it hard to differentiate what memory upgrade you need for your apple computer

The 1.25GHZ eMac 17inch requires PC2700 DDR SDRAM DIMMS. This model of eMac ships with 256mb ram but can accomodate a maxium of 1GB of memory in it’s two memory banks with one socket in each bank. One or even both of the memory sockets might already be filled with memory, and if so – you’ll need to replace the memory with 2x 512mb memory modules to max out the memory in the 1.25GHz eMac.

The 1.42GH eMac 17 inch with combo drive also requires 184 pin PC2700 dimms. it too has a maximum memory of 1GB capability and there’s two banks for memory upgrades with one slot in each bank. again, if one of the banks are full of memory you’ll have to replace each bank with newer, bigger memory modules. 2x 512mb pc2700 sdram dimms will max out this eMac model.

The 1.42GHz eMac with 17inch screen and superdrive released in 2005 requires PC2700 DDR DIMMs. This eMac’s requirements are exactly the same as the 1.42GHz eMac with the combo drive I listed above. The only difference is that this eMac is equipped with a superdrive, as opposed to the combo drive.

The Apple eMac 1GHz with 17inch (model number M8951LL/b) uses pc133 sdram dimms and can accomodate 1GB of memory with it’s two memory banks with a memory socket allocated to each bank. To maximize the memory in this eMac, I suggest 2×512mb pc133 memory which will allow the maximum of 1GB of memory to be realized.

The Apple eMac 1GHz with 17 inch screen (model number m9251LL/A) also requires PC133 SDRAM DIMMs. Again, two banks of memory with one memory socket in each memory bank allow a maximum of 1GB of ram. You need to buy 2 x 512mb PC133 SDRAM dimms, which I suggest for this model.

The Apple eMac 1GHz with 17 inch screen (model number M9252LL/A) is the third email model so far to also required PC 133 SDRAM Dimms with one memory slot being allocated to the two memory sockets, with a maxiumum of 1 GB of memory will be recognized. To do this, you will need to buy 2x 512mb PC 133 sdram dimms.

The Apple eMac with 1GHz and the ATI graphics chipset (model number M8950LL/A) uses PC133 sdram dimms and also has a maximum ram capablity of 1GB. 2x 512mb memory with one pc133 sdram dimm in each memory upgrade slot will max ou the memory in this eMac model.

The Apple eMac with 700GHz also uses PC133 SDRAM DIMMS, and all else is the same as it’s faster siblings above: 2 memory banks with one memory slot per bank allow for a maximum of 1GB of ram recognized.

The Apple eMac 800MHz (model number M9150LL/a) uses PC133 SDRAM DIMMS again, and with two memory upgrade slots, it’s capable of using and recognizing 1gb of memory, replacing the 128mb the eMac originally shipped with.

(2×512mb). But this Macbook can accept up to 4GB of RAM and I suggest you upgrade the ram to the max as the price of ram is now affordable. You’ll need two 2GB PC2-5300 DDR dimms to do so.

The Apple MacBook 13.3 inch 2.1 GHz Intel core 2 Duo (model number MB402LL/B) uses PC2-5300 DDR ram just like the Macbook Model I listed above and this model comes shipped with the same standard ram of 1GB, but can be upgraded to four gigabytes of ram with the use and purchase of two 2GB memory chips.

But you can max out this Macbook with another 2gb of ram, but you will have to replace the two one gigabyte memory chips already installed with two new 2gB memory upgrades to reach the maximum four gigabytes of memory that this Macbook will recognize.

The Apple MacBook 13.3 inch 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo released in Late 2007 (model number MB062LL/B) use pc2-5300 ddr2 sdram dimms and this macbook came from apple with only 1gb of memory shipped in two 512mb memory chips. But you can upgrade this Macbook model with two 2gb memory upgrades and you’ll get the maximum memory allowed of 4GB which is what I recommend for this MacBook Model. You will have to replace the factory ram with the newer memory that you buy.

The Apple MacBook 13.3. inch 2.GHz with Intel Core 2 Duo processor that was introduced by Apple in late 2oo7 (model number MB063LL/B) uses PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM and this macbook model came from apple shipped with 1GB as the standard default memory configuration 0f 512mb x 2. To upgrade to the 4GB maximum memory for this macbook you will need to buy 2GB of ram x 2 and install one 2gb module in each of the two memory upgrade slots.

The Apple MacBook 13.3 inch 2.4 GHz model that was released in late 2008 (model number MB467LL/a) requires DDR3 memory, specifically PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM (sometimes called DDR3 1066 too). This model of macbook came from the apple factory with 2gb of ram standard but can accept and recognize up to 6gb of memory. To upgrade to the 6GB maximum, you will need to buy and replace the factory ram with one 2GB memory upgrade and one 4GB memory upgrade in the two memory upgrade slots available, replacing the factory installed ram.

The Apple MacBook 13.3 inch 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo released in early 2008 (model number MB403LL/A) uses DDR 2 PC2 5300 ddr2 sdram dimms and this particular macbook came from apple with 2gb of ram already installed in the macbook, but you can upgrade the ram on this macbook to 4gb with the purchase of 2×2gB memory modules, replacing the factory ram in the two memory slots available for upgrades.
